Hard water leaves white spots on paint and glass. Here is why they form, how to avoid them at home and how a detail removes them.

Why the spots form

Hard water carries dissolved minerals. When a drop of it dries on your car, the water leaves but the minerals stay behind as a white ring.

Hard water is common in the Pahrump area, so washing a car at home or getting hit by a sprinkler can leave spots on paint and glass.

How to avoid them

Wash in the shade and in sections, and dry each section right away with a clean microfiber towel before it can air dry.

Keep the car away from lawn sprinklers. If it does get hit, dry it off soon; the longer spots sit in the sun, the harder they are to remove.

When the spots will not come off

Fresh spots usually wipe off. Spots that have baked on for weeks can etch the clear coat and need more than a wash.

An exterior detail includes a careful wash and hand dry, and catching spots early keeps them from etching into the finish.
